미국 대학원 합격 후 (4) - TA 스피킹 시험 (language assessment)

International Student들은 TOEFL이외에도 TA를 하기위한 말하기 시험을 통과해야하는데 (RA펀딩을 받은 학생들도 이 시험을 쳐야하는걸 보면 그냥 모든 international student들의 공통 관문인듯..), TOEFL 스피킹 27점 이상 or IELTS 스피킹 8.0 이상이어야 이 시험이 면제가 됐기 때문에;;, 토종한국인인 필자는 language assessment (english assessment)시험을 봐야했다 ㅠ. 학교마다 이런시험을 보는곳도 있고 아닌곳도 있겠지만 혹시나 다른사람에게도 도움이 될까 싶어서 기록을 남기기로 했다. 
 
시험은 ACTFL Speaking Assessment: OPI (Oral Proficiency Interview)를 기반으로 면접관과 1:1로 진행된다. 
ACTFL은 총 5 등급으로 나뉘는데: novice, intermediate, advanced, superior, distinguished.
superior과 distinguished를 제외한 나머지 등급은 3개의 sub-levels가 존재한다.: low, mid, high.
각 등급과 평가기준에 대해서는 다음 가이드라인을 참조하길 바란다. -> (가이드라인) 
이 시험에서 Advanced Low 이상 등급을 취득해야하며, Intermediate High를 취득한 학생은 TA를 수행함과 동시에 학기 중에 영어말하기 관련 보충수업을 들어야하고, Intermediate Mid 이하부터는 보충수업을 듣고 Intermediate High이상을 취득할때까지 다시 시험을 쳐야한다. 
 
시험은 약 30분간 진행되며 2파트로 나뉜다. 첫번째 파트에서는 사전질문을 기반으로 한 일상대화를 하고 두번째 파트에서는 본인의 분야를 처음 접하는 학부생이 이해할 수 있는 수준으로 해당 분야의 입문개념을 2~3분간 설명하는 시험이다. 이때 ppt와 같은 시각적 자료는 사용할 수 없으며, 줄줄 읽는 대본을 사용할수없고 (참고용 메모는 사용가능), 영어 실력 이외에 강의력(?)은 평가되지 않는다. 

<첫번째 파트 : 일상대화 사전 질문> - 이 중 몇개를 면접관이 선택해서 대화를 진행하게 된다.

시험은 시차때문에 우리나라시간으로 오전 2시~ 6시 사이에 치뤄야 했다. 시험 시작할때 2분의 여성 면접관들이 들어오셨고 정말x2 편안한 분위기에서 진행됐다. 시험이라기보단 그냥 수다떠는 느낌 or 전화영어하는느낌이었다. 25분 정도는 그냥 위에 주제들로 일상대화를 이것저것하다가 5분동안 짧게 강의 시연(?) 을 했다. 시험을 다 치고나서 생각해보니 너무 일상대화라 뭐 연습할것도 없었고 그냥 영어로 소통이 되는 사람인지 알아보려는 목적인거 같았다 ㅋㅋ.... 체감상 토플보다 몇배는 쉬운느낌이어서 토플 스피킹 27점 맞으려고 여러번 30만원을 투자할바엔 그냥 대충 미니멈만 넘기고 학교 자체시험을 치는게 더 낫겠다는 생각이 들었다.
결과는 시험을 치고 난 뒤 24~48시간 내에 이메일로 알려준다고 했었는데, 시험을 치루고 약 20시간이 지난 시점에 통과 (Advanced Low 이상 등급)했다고 이메일이 왔다.
